About

Welcome to Whiskers & Mink!

We are a husband and wife duo (he is an engineer / woodworker, she is a social worker / printmaker). We live and work in San Francisco with our ever growing family of rescue animals. Follow our cat & other adventures on Instagram: @domino.gardencat, where we are known as Mr. and Mrs. Human 😁

A bit of background on how we came about: in the spring of 2023 a young scrawny black & white tux feral cat, with a mustache and patchy feet, started to hang around our backyard. While weary like all ferals, Domino was also curious and bold and there was something about the way he'd watch from a safe distance that captivated us. We started feeding him and soon Domino was spending the nights on our dogs' outdoor beds.

As winter approached, we grew worried about Domino and after much thought and research, Mr. Human designed & built the first heated cat house with a built-in camera, the Red House.

The very first night after the Red House was installed in the backyard, Domino slept in it. We couldn't believe it! We were over the moon!

Soon we started to realize that there were quite a few other feral cats around as well, they were just much sneakier than Domino. Mr. Human designed and built more houses and we also set about to trap and fix every feral we could get our hands on.

After about 2 years of feeding, trapping and caring, we have fixed all cats that come by regularly.

We also ended up with two permanent residents: Domino and Howie.
Throughout all this, Mr. Human was chronicling the entire project over on Instagram. We seem to have struck a chord. Our content went viral a few times, and we were featured on The Dodo multiple times as well.

We got tons of requests to sell cat houses as well as some of the other things that Mr. Human was building for our animals (both outdoor and indoor) -- and some of the non-animal related furnishings he has created for our home. For her part, the multi-talented Mrs. Human is a gifted printmaker and many of her prints feature the animals. We got many requests to sell these prints as well.

We already had a small side business selling mostly art at local shows, but the this online interest led to us refocusing primarily on our online audience.

Our project continues... the best way to keep up to date on the happenings is to follow on Instagram as well as subscribe to our newsletter.
